THE STORY BEHIND THE PAINTING OF THIS SCULPTURE
I love the story behind this sculpture. The original sculpture of "Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss", sometimes also called "Psyche Revived by the Kiss of Eros" done by Antonio Canova that can be found in Paris, Musee du Louvre.
The winged man is the god Eros (Cupid in Latin) and he lands on a rock by an unconscious girl and her name is Psyche. Cupid's mother Venus (Goddess of Love and Beauty) demanded that Psyche brings back a flask from the Underworld, strictly forbidding her to open it. But Psyche's curiosity got the better of her, and as soon as she opens it she breathes in the terrible fumes and than she fell into deep, deathlike sleep. When Cupid saw her lying motionless he rushed to her and touched her gently with the tip of his arrow, to make sure she was not dead. Cupid lifts his beloved Psyche in tender embrace, his face close to hers as Psyche sinks backwards, languorously taking her lover's head between her hands. At the end of the tale the gods decide in council to grant Cupid Psyche's hand in marriage, making her immortal and making her the goddess of the Soul.
